It's been a rather frugal transfer window from Chelsea thus far.

Usually the west Londoners are amongst the Premier League's biggest spenders but this summer they've been somewhat more cautious, splashing out just £58million on Asmir Begovic, Kenedy, Abdul Rahman Baba and Pedro whilst signing Radamel Falcao on a season-long loan from Monaco.

But the stuttered start to their Premier League title defence, winning just one of their first three games and losing 3-0 to Manchester City, appears to have convinced both manager Jose Mourinho and owner Roman Abramovich that new recruits are required if the Blues intend to become the first retainers of the English crown in six years.

And we are now in that magical time of the year when practically anything seems possible - the final week of the summer transfer window.

So could we see some last-minute arrivals before the 6pm transfer deadline on September 1st? Football Fancast look at FIVE deals Chelsea might get over the line just in time.

JOHN STONES

Let's start with what we already know. Chelsea have launched three bids for John Stones and are expected to make a fourth and final offer of £40million following the Everton defender's transfer request.

He's been billed as a long-term successor to John Terry for some time and the Blues captain's turbulent start to the season - thus far finishing just one of three Premier League fixtures after a substitution against Manchester City and a red card on Sunday - appears to have drastically escalated Jose Mourinho's interest in the prodigious defender.

That £40million may seem like an extortionate sum but Chelsea see it as a sound investment, acquiring a player who could be in the first team for the next ten years but also capable of making an immediate contribution.

Indeed, the 21 year-old is easily the most exciting home-grown defensive prospect around at the minute, combining an astute reading of the game with unique elegance, technical quality and pace for a centre-half. Many have compared him to a young Rio Ferdinand.

Whether the Premier League champions can get a deal over the line, however, remains to be seen. Martinez rejected Stones' transfer request this morning and has once again reiterated that he won't be allowed to leave Goodison before the close of the summer window.

EZEQUIEL GARAY

A rumoured last-minute alternative to John Stones, reports earlier this week claimed Chelsea have made an approach for Zenit St. Petersburg star Ezequiel Gary.

Jose Mourinho deemed the Argentina international surplus to requirements as Real Madrid boss in 2011, paving the way for a move to Benfica.

But he's since emerged as one of the prominent centre-backs outside of Europe's leading top flights, claiming a Primeira Liga title and reaching two Europa League finals during his time at Estadio da Luz and winning the domestic league with Zenit last term.

Garay's lack of pace could be an issue in the Premier League but he's otherwise a very physical, old fashioned defender famed for his dominance in the air - perhaps demonstrated best by his return of 9 goals in 78 outings for Benfica.

The 28 year-old moved to the Russian top flight only last summer but he allegedly wants out already, which has alerted fellow suitors Sevilla and Roma.

Zenit insist their star centre-back won't be allowed to leave the club so late in the transfer window, but Garay is certain to push for a move if Chelsea make a concrete bid.

ALEXANDRE PATO

Jose Mourinho seems more than content with his current striking options and indeed he should be. In Diego Costa, Radamel Falcao and Loic Remy, you'd assume Chelsea have enough quality and firepower to retain the English title.

But should the Portuguese feel he needs further additions up front, he might turn to former AC Milan star Alexandre Pato - who was offered to Chelsea and Manchester United for the relatively modest price of just £11million earlier this week.

The 5 foot 9 striker has suffered a rather spectacular fall from grace over the last few years. He originally joined the San Siro ranks as a 16 year-old and went on to bag 51 goals in 117 Serie A appearances but now finds himself back in the Brazilian top flight after a spate of relentless injury problems.

It didn't go too well for the 26 year-old at Corithians either but he's begun to rediscover the form of old during a lengthy loan stint with Sao Paolo, amassing 34 goals in 70 appearances - which has convinced his parent club that now is probably the right time to sell.

Once again, a Chelsea bid at this stage in the transfer window seems rather unlikely for considering the Brazil international's tribulations over the last few years. But should Mourinho feel that last-minute urge to add extra firepower, Pato is one of the few options still realistically available.

ANTHONY MARTIAL

Another striker allegedly on the Chelsea radar is Monaco's Anthony Martial, who has been dubbed by some as 'the new Thierry Henry'.

His record for the Ligue 1 outfit isn't exactly outstanding, thus far netting just 13 times in 57 appearances across all competitions. But the 19 year-old developed at a phenomenal rate over the course of last season whilst his record for France across the junior levels is certainly impressive; 25 goals in 51 outings.

Blessed with an abundance of power and pace, Martial's progress has seen him linked with a number of Premier League clubs this summer, particularly Arsenal, Tottenham and now Chelsea.

The Metro even claim the Blues have tabled a rather incredible £39million bid, which seems considerably unlikely.

But reports over the last few days have suggested Monaco might now be forced to sell the prodigious attacker after failing to negotiate their way through the Champions League's play-off round - which could see the Blues make an offer more in the realms of financial sanity.

Along with Arsenal and Spurs, however, Chelsea now face competition from Barcelona for Martial's signature - according to talkSPORT.

PAUL POGBA

It may seem borderline implausible but nothing is completely beyond the realms of possibility in the final week of the summer transfer window.

According to The Independent and just about everybody else, Chelsea are pushing to complete a £70million deal for Juventus star Paul Pogba before the transfer deadline on September 1st.

Needless to say, the France international is the most in-demand central midfielder in world football, linked to virtually every major European club from Barcelona to Manchester City in no small part due to his unique blend of imperious physicality, technical flair, creativity and netting prowess.

Indeed, the 22 year-old is already a very complete player - last season claiming 10 goals across all competitions whilst averaging 1.7 tackles, 1.3 created chances and 2.8 successful dribbles per match in Serie A - and when driving at the opposition with the ball at his feet often portrays that Yaya-Toure-esque image of men against boys.

Juve are believed to have already turned down a handful of bids from Barcelona - who are almost certain to come calling again next summer once their transfer embargo is lifted.

But as pointed out by The Evening Standard, the sheer fact the Serie A champions are still entertaining negotiations with Chelsea this late in the transfer window suggests they're prepared to sell for the right price.

Likewise, reports this morning allege Belgium international Axel Witsel might be about to join the Old Lady as Pogba's replacement.
