Dimitri Payet once again scored a late goal for France as his side beat a defiant Albania 2-0 in Marseille on Wednesday night to make it two wins in two for the hosts at EURO 2016.

It took until the 90th minute for the deadlock to be broken, when substitute Antoine Griezmann nodded in Adil Rami’s cross to break Albania’s hearts, before Payet countered superbly with the visitors throwing men forward to curl home and grab his second of the tournament.

It was once again the West Ham United midfielder who stole the show, and not merely because of his 96th minute solo effort. Payet was up to his usual tricks, pulling off dazzling flicks, cute passes and tremendous bits of skill throughout and looked full to the brim with confidence.

The former Lille man is making only his first appearance at a major international tournament is determined to make it his own, having scored twice and created a whopping 14 chances for his team-mates in only 180 minutes of football.

To put that into perspective, Zinedine Zidane - who hold’s the record for most chances created in one tournament at EURO 2004 - created 15.

It is no wonder all of Europe’s top clubs have begun to circle the Hammers' midfielder - none more so than Chelsea.

Stranger things have happened than West Ham potentially parting ways with Payet after his heroics, and here is why Chelsea and incoming manager Antonio Conte should do all they can to secure the Frenchman’s services next season…

Value for Money

In a very MasterCard fashion, West Ham described their man of the moment as ‘priceless’, and refused to acknowledge that the Frenchman has a monetary value ahead of this transfer window.

Recently however, a valuation of around £60m was quoted from the club in an attempt to warn of potential suitors, however if he keeps playing the way he has done he may be worth every penny.

Considering Chelsea have spent big money in the past, splashing a huge sum on a world class player in his prime would make more sense than three/four mediocre signings, much like they did last summer. (sorry, Pedro)

Form of his Life

Payet

Payet has admitted that moving to West Ham has helped him improve exponentially. However, the Frenchman had enjoyed a great final season at former club Marseille, where he created more chances in Europe than any other player besides Lionel Messi, and made 17 assists - topping the Ligue 1 chart.

Now with a spectacular Premier League season under his belt - where he was nominated for PFA Player of the Year and named in the PFA’s Team of the Season - Payet has entered EURO 2016 in the form of his life and is brimming with confidence. Considering his electric start to the tournament, if Chelsea were to acquire the Frenchman’s services, surely he will only continue to improve.

Hazard Reunion

Hazard

Chelsea’s Eden Hazard and Payet played together whilst at Lille between 2011-2012 and helped their side finish third in Ligue 1 and gain a prestigious Champions League position. The Hammers man has since credited his former Belgian counterpart with ‘making him the player he is today’.

While at Lille, it may have been Hazard who stole the headlines, but Payet’s rise to the top represents both perseverance. I’m sure both players would love the opportunity to play with each other once again.

Sorry, not sorry

West Ham United v Crystal Palace - Barclays Premier League

The London rivalry between Chelsea and West Ham is fierce, and for the first time in a number of years it was the east London club who out-did their south west city counterparts, finishing five places above them in the league and having an altogether far more successful season.

With a move to the Olympic Stadium ahead and an era of potential growth for the Hammers, signing West Ham’s talisman who has represented their growth over the past year would be somewhat sweet for Chelsea fans.

Considering the Blues have done the same in the past with Glen Johnson, Joe Cole and of course Frank Lampard, why not let history repeat itself?

Chelsea Departures

Willian

It is no secret that there is a certain level of unrest at Stamford Bridge following their dismal season in which the Blues finished 10th in the Premier League and crashed out of all other cup competitions.

While Eden Hazard looks likely to remain, a number of Chelsea’s other attacking midfielders are set to part ways with the club this summer. Pedro allegedly wants to go back to Barca, Willian may be subject to a reunion with Jose Mourinho at United, and Oscar seems set to get that Juventus move he has craved for so long.

That leaves plenty of space in Chelsea’s front line, and who better than to fill their boots than arguably the world’s most in-form player?
