Chelsea have thus far been the most impressive English team in the transfer market. Along with addressing the centre-forward position with Diego Costa, the club have also added Cesc Fabregas and Filipe Luis, with youngster Kurt Zouma also providing depth at centre-back.

With the resources available to Jose Mourinho, it’s unlikely all their transfer business is done. Their depth in midfield and attack is impressive and Mourinho has a strong defensive record across European football.

Last season was said to have been the Premier League’s most exciting, with a title winner undecided until the last day of the season. This time, there will be even more teams in the mix, with Manchester United sure to be revived under Louis van Gaal.

Thibaut Courtois

Petr Cech’s future is yet to be decided, with PSG a possible destination, but Chelsea will be able to look to the future with Thibaut Courtois, who is more than capable of replacing the Czech international.

Courtois was a vital member of the Atletico Madrid side that won the Spanish league title last season, as well as the Europa League and Copa del Rey in prior seasons. Bar Manuel Neuer, it’s difficult to think of a better goalkeeper in world football than the Belgium international.

A strong goalkeeper is key to a title-winning team, and in Courtois, Chelsea have a player who can help them to multiple titles over the coming years.

Diego Costa

Chelsea have finally signed a striker that has can be relied upon, with Diego Costa coming off his best season of his career with 27 league goals for Atletico Madrid.

Unlike Fernando Torres in 2011, Costa isn’t struggling with injury, and in comparison to Andriy Shevchenko, the Spanish international, at 25, is far more likely to adjust to life in English football.

It means there is a fine balance to the Chelsea team, with quality in all areas of the pitch. The addition of Didier Drogba is another bonus, but Costa is good enough to put away the many chances to team are sure to create over the coming season. It’s been a long time since the club have been able to call on an in-form striker like Costa.

Strongest defence in the league

On paper at least, Chelsea look to have the best defence in the league following the addition of Filipe Luis. Not only that, Nemanja Matic’s signing last January will prove to be vital for the club this season.

Of last season’s top four, Chelsea had by far the advantage in the goals against column, registering only 27. By comparison, champions Manchester City conceded 37, and Liverpool an alarming 50.

It’s something extremely positive for Chelsea to build on, indicating further that most of the problems were at the other end of the pitch.

Mourinho

Jose Mourinho is a winner, he’s proven that wherever he’s been. And though there were disappointments last season, it should only be a matter of time before the Portuguese lifts the Premier League title once again.

Defensively, Mourinho is yet to lose his touch, masterminding impressive wins away to Liverpool and Manchester City last season, and now with a higher class of talent added to the squad, particularly at centre-forward, there should be no reason why he can’t bring Chelsea their first league title since 2010.

Are other teams ready?

As impressive as Chelsea have been with their summer spend, it’s also worth asking whether other title challengers are good enough to go the distance.

Manchester United clearly have the largest amount of ground to make up. Louis van Gaal is an excellent manager who should restore the club to the top of the league table. But considering how much work there is to do, will next season come too soon?

Arsenal have also done well this summer, but does Arsene Wenger’s side have the mentality and experience to win the league? The talent is there, but questions remain of Arsenal, especially after last season’s defeats at Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea.

Manchester City, despite being champions, may be in danger of repeating the mistakes they made following their title win in 2012. They’ve made addition but they haven’t been outstanding.

And as for Liverpool, money has been spent, but the loss of Luis Suarez may prove to be too much to see them to another title challenge like the one they had last season.
