The chase to sign Italian centre-half Leonardo Bonucci is hotting up and it seems to be Man United and Chelsea that are leading the way in the Premier League for the defensive titan's signature.

Bonucci has received countless plaudits across his career with Inter Milan and Juventus and now two of the Premier League's biggest clubs are set to battle out over the 29-year-old.

It has been reported that he is top of Mourinho's list at Old Trafford as he looks to sure up his defence but Jose will face stiff competition from his former club for the Juve man.

His performances at EURO 2016 under incoming Chelsea manager have been second to none as Italy have looked by far the most comfortable side, in terms of the defensive setup, out of all 24 in France so far and that is due in no small part to the efforts of Bonucci, who also played under Conte for the entirety of his tenure as Juventus boss.

Whoever signs Bonucci will be adding great quality to their squad, but here are FIVE reasons why Chelsea should pull out all the stops to beat United to their man...

HISTORY

Real Madrid v Juventus - UEFA Champions League Semi Final Second Leg

Bonucci has previous under the guidance of Antonio Conte, and that is priceless experience. Under Conte, Bonucci helped Juventus to three successive Serie A titles from 2011-2014 as well as two domestic cups.

In order to develop a team of winners at Chelsea, as Mourinho did in his first spell at the club, Conte would do well to bring in players who he can trust and who he knows have a culture of winning with him already, something that can spread to the rest of the squad.

HE KNOWS THE SYSTEM

Belgium v Italy - EURO 2016 - Group E

Conte has found success with both Juventus and Italy implementing and playing his style of football onto teams, and that won't change at Chelsea.

He favours a 3-5-2 with three solid centre-halves who can allow the wing-backs to move forwards when attacking.

Bonucci is one of the best in the world in this role and Conte will want a player he knows can carry out this system to perfection, Zouma and Cahill will also need help in learning to play this way having played in a traditional back four for their careers, and who better to learn from than the best?

PEDIGREE

Conte has come to Chelsea to win titles, and to do that you need players who know how to win.

Aside from the younger players coming through, Chelsea have a squad of players whom all have a Premier League title under or two under their belt.

However, after the disaster that was last season, they need players with fresh confidence and form when it comes to silverware.

Again, Bonucci fits the profile here after an illustrious career to date having won 13 titles since 2005 with both Inter Milan and Juventus.

A player with this many honours breeds confidence within a squad and could be just what Conte needs to turn his side around after last seasons disappointments.

STYLE

Bonucci has to be amongst the most technically gifted central defenders in modern world football. In an age where ball playing footballers are what most managers demand, Bonucci is the master.

The Italian international moved to centre-half from midfield and is phenomenal with the ball at his feet. Whether the ball has been played back to him or won from an opponent, Bonucci has marvellous composure which allows him time to pick his pass, whether that be a longer ball to a target man or a perfectly timed diagonal to a wide man.

CHELSEA NEED COVER

John Terry

A good Chelsea side has always been built from the back, epitomised by club icon John Terry.

But now the club in somewhat of a transition, with Terry having signed a new contract and agreeing to take a lesser role in terms of playing and Gary Cahill's performances over the last season having being criticised.

Once back from injury, Zouma should continue his progression and come on to be a key player for Conte, but Chelsea fans need some reassurance now, and that could come in the form of Leonardo Bonucci.
