Chelsea fans can be forgiven for growing a little frustrated at the lack of transfer business having taken place in the west of London so far this summer.

The Blues, as we all know, put up a feeble title defence last term to finish in a lowly midtable position, so additions are clearly needed, but Antonio Conte’s EURO 2016 responsibilities have somewhat put the buffers on business.

Michy Batshuayi has, however, been drafted in, and it’s highly unlikely that the promising Belgian will be the only addition of the window, even though he cost a not insignificant £33m.

Conte certainly has the pulling power to make things happen, while Chelsea will remain an enticing proposition for a host of top players due to their recent history and London setting.

So who could follow Batshuayi in posing with the blue shirt this summer? Here are FIVE options…

Axel Witsel

Reports surfaced this morning that would have irked Everton fans suggesting that Witsel is now on Chelsea’s radar.

The Blues have a habit of moving in late to beat Premier league rivals to big names players – Willian was linked with both Liverpool and Spurs before choosing the west end of the capital – so it would be no shock to see him head for Stamford Bridge.

The burly Zenit Saint Petersburg star’s future should be resolved in the coming weeks now he’s back from representing Belgium at the EUROs, and the lure of London and representing side that are, albeit out of the Champions League, of a greater status may well sway the 27-year-old.

Andre Gomes

A rejected £40m bid suggests Chelsea are extremely interested in the Valencia man, who has seen his reputation boosted during Portugal’s journey to the semi-finals of the EUROs.

The 22-year-old is known for his silky passing and composure from a central midfield role, which wouldn’t go amiss under Conte, who will be all too aware that Cesc Fabregas’ powers have waned over the course of the past 12 months or so.

Although Valencia are playing hardball over a fee, Los Che are not sue to be in any form of European competition next term after a poor 2015/16, and the financial realities of this may hit home before the close of the window.

N’Golo Kante

N'Golo Kante

This rumour has been floating around for a while, and may gather momentum when France finish their EURO 2016 campaign.

The industrious holding midfielder was a major factor in Leicester’s stunning title win last term, but reports have already suggested that he’s considering a move away from the King Power Stadium, with Chelsea his destination of choice.

Although it could be argued that the Foxes are in a position to rebuff interest, they have snapped up Nampalys Mendy from Nice, who is a seemingly direct replacement.

Alvaro Morata

Alvaro Morata

Conte’s dream front two in either a 3-5-2 or 4-2-4 set-up will see Diego Costa line up alongside… Alvaro Morata, apparently. Although this deal appears to be a little unlikely given that Batshuayi was signed for a not insignificant £33m, with Alexandre Pato and Radamel Falcao having been let go and Loic Remy’s future far from clear, another body is certainly needed.

Alongside the bustling Costa, Morata’s deft movement and instincts in the 18-year box could be of use.

Kalidou Koulibaly

With Kurt Zouma injured, John Terry ageing and Gary Cahill’s stock having fallen, Chelsea certainly need a new centre-back, and this need will only hasten if Conte does opt to bring his three-man rearguard system with him to Stamford Bridge.

Links with big name Italian players such as Leonardo Bonucci may be a bit far-fetched given the lack of Champions League football in west London, but Napoli’s Koulibaly is certainly a ‘gettable’ target.

Reports have already claimed that the Senegalese defender is a wanted man, and his mix of physicality and awareness certainly make him desirable.
