Frank Lampard hopes Jose Mourinho returns to Chelsea in the summer, even if the midfielder himself moves on.
The Stamford Bridge veteran is out of contract at the end of the campaign and is keen to sign a new contract, but as yet he has not been offered a new deal.
Mourinho is widely expected to depart Real Madrid in the summer in order to rejoin Chelsea, who will part ways with interim boss Rafael Benitez at the end of the campaign.
Lampard was a key member of the squad during Mourinho’s previous three-year spell in charge of Chelsea, which came to an end in 2007.
However, while the 34-year-old believes it would be a huge boost to Chelsea if Mourinho does leave Real Madrid to rejoin the Londoners, he admits he is unsure as to whether it would increase his own chances of securing a contract extension at Stamford Bridge.
“I’ve always said that I wanted to spend all of my career here so I think everyone knows that,” Lampard said.
“I honestly don’t know (whether Mourinho’s return would help my cause).
“But he is certainly one of the greatest if not the greatest manager in world football. I think it would be a great thing for the club.
“We have got two weeks that will decide whether our season has been a successful one or not. That is the main focus.”
