Jose Mourinho has backed Petr Cech to stay at Chelsea, and in doing so has cast doubt over the future of on loan goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, according to the Daily Star.

Cech’s future has been the subject of debate, with the highly rated Courtois having spent the last three seasons on loan at Atletico Madrid, where he has continued to excel.

Having joined the club in 2011, the Belgian is yet to make his Chelsea debut, and has admitted he wants a quick decision as to whether he will return to play at Stamford Bridge next season.

But Mourinho has revealed how he hopes to see Cech continue to represent the Blues between the posts next season, and continue to break records, having kept his 209th clean sheet against Hull City at the weekend – a statistic that broke Peter Bonetti’s record.

"Petr is almost 10 years playing at the top and there has been clean sheet after clean sheet," Mourinho said.

"At this moment he beats the record of Mr Bonetti but I think probably next year he will beat the record of the Premier League.

"He becomes a historic figure in the Premier League because all his career has been here since 2004.

"Also playing with Chelsea he has a lot of appearances and the best stage for a goalkeeper I think is between 30 and 35."

Courtois recently explained he was unsure as to what his parent club have planned for him next season.

"About my future, I cannot wait much longer," the Belgian stopper said.

"I need to make a decision with Chelsea as soon as possible, in March, but at the moment I do not really want to talk because there are so many games and you must be focused."
