As Everton went on to secure a 2-0 win over Guus Hiddink's resurgent Chelsea side, it was an ex-player discarded by the Blues, who came back to haunt them.

With the match seemingly destined for a replay, Romelu Lukaku took it upon himself to score two late goals to book a trip to Wembley for the Toffees. When Jose decided it was right to let the Belgian leave Stamford Bridge, for a record Everton fee of £28million, many questioned whether Jose was being too rash.

With this season's tally now up to 20 goals in all competitions, it looks like a major blunder by Jose and the Stamford Bridge outfit.

These sort of transfers have bewildered many fans. Not only was Lukaku let go to early, by other world class players were too. The likes of Felipe Luiz after only one season, Columbian star Juan Cuadrado after half a season and German World Cup winner Andre Schurrle was sold to Wolfsburg.

Players coming in weren't special either; Pedro from Barcelona, Baba Rahman from Augsburg and Michael Hector from Reading (loaned back immediately) haven't set the world alike. There was a foreshadowing feel about Jose's recruitment policy this summer, eventually leading to his demise at the club in his third season.

With Lukaku showing Chelsea what they're missing out on, and them Blues instead looking towards strikers Falcao and Remy at times this season, you have to wonder what Jose thinking.

Other ex-players could come back to haunt the Blues some time in the future when they make it into Europe again. Therefore, if Jose were to have carried on and made such transfers, most would be grateful he has been sacked, with star studded players out of Stamford Bridge even before they're given a chance, now going onto haunting them.
