Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Blaise Matuidi believes that Edinson Cavani is more than capable of stepping up to fill the Zlatan Ibrahimovic-shaped hole in their attack for this week’s Champions League clash with Chelsea.
The enigmatic Swede is largely seen as the Parisians’ top name, but they will be without him against the Blues after he suffered an injury of the first leg of the tie at the Parc des Princes – a game which the home side won 3-1.
In ‘Ibra’s’ absence, Cavani is expected to take a more central role for PSG after being pushed out wide to accommodate his team-mate.
The Uruguayan is by no means a poor man’s alternative – he cost the Ligue 1 champions in excess of £50m over the summer – and Matuidi believes that he is the ideal player to help his club finish off Chelsea in London:
“Zlatan’s our top goalscorer and our top assist maker and he’s scored a lot of goals for this club.” He is quoted by The Express.
“Of course he’s an essential player missing from our side but I think we have a lot of players who are able to replace him, world class players.
“I’m thinking particularly about Edinson Cavani, who’s also scored a lot of goals.
“I think in the past we’ve shown we can deal without Zlatan when he’s not in the side so I think it’s important as a club to do everything in our power for Zlatan to be able to take part in the semi-finals because I’m sure he’d like to be there.”
