Chelsea have been dealt a blow in their chase for Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane, after the defender played down any talk of a summer move.
The 21-year-old Frenchman – who will represent his nation at the World Cup – is one of Europe’s most highly rated centre-backs, and has established himself as a regular at the Bernabeu despite his youthful age.
Jose Mourinho is known to be a massive fan of the classy enforcer after coaching him at Real, where he gave him his first genuine taste of top-level first-team action.
With David Luiz set to leave Stamford Bridge to join PSG in a £50m deal, ‘The Special One’ is thought to be on the lookout for a replacement, with rumours indicating that Varane is a top target.
But the Los Blancos star says that he has no interest in the rumours and that he is fully focused in performing well for Les Bleus in Brazil:
“An interest in Chelsea?” he is quoted by Goal.
“At this time, I am not thinking about any of that. There is a World Cup to prepare for, this is not the time to discuss these types of questions.”
