Roma centre-back Mehdi Benatia is ready to turn down a move to Manchester City in order to seal a switch to Chelsea, according to reports from The Express.

The Moroccan defender was one of Serie A’s top performers last term as he fired the capital city based club into second place, but he is said to be on the verge of leaving after just one season.

Benatia is understood to be unwilling to sign the new deal he’s been offered by Roma, which has seen interest from Premier League sides spike.

City and Chelsea are the two clubs most interested in the 27-year-old, with rumours indicating that each are willing to pay around £25m to lure him away from the Stadio Olimpico.

Even though the Sky Blues are English football’s top dogs after lifting the title, Benatia is thought to favour life in London with Chelsea, where he could be the replacement for David Luiz.

Roma’s asking price should not be too much of a problem for the Blues, with their Brazilian star set to seal an astonishing £40m switch to PSG in the coming weeks.
