Chelsea have a very star studded squad but some of their top performers on club level failed to reproduce their domestic form on the world stage. With a few new additions to the squad, competition, especially in the midfield areas will be quite high.

Jose Mourinho will need to slowly review his players who took part in the World Cup and see which of them deserve to be in his starting eleven. However, with pre-season beginning shortly, he can also take this time to see the players who still got something to prove.

Fernando Torres (Spain – Striker)

Fernando Torres never seemed to produce the goals that came with his £50 million price tag and a Chelsea scoring drought didn’t aid his cause either. With three appearances at the World Cup, two of them as a substitute, he did manage to bag one goal.

Under heavy criticism for his abilities to find the back of the net, Torres continues to impress Jose Mourinho with his ability to take players on while providing chances. It looks as though Spain’s early exit could give him another shot at proving his worth despite the arrival of Diego Costa.

Gary Cahill (England – Centre-back)

Gary Cahill proved to be a rock for Chelsea throughout the previous English Premier League season and was considered a key member of the England backline. However, he wasn’t in his best form producing some rather mediocre performances which eventually saw his side get eliminated from the World Cup early.

What this does is show Jose Mourinho as well as Roy Hodgson that the key to their team’s defence lies with veteran centre-back John Terry. Cahill looked all over the place when paired with Phil Jagielka with his place looking in jeopardy after Mourinho announced his desire to sign another defensive player.

Eden Hazard (Belgium – Winger)

Eden Hazard began the season with a string of sensational performances and with Belgium considered a very strong side; he looked to be his nation’s key man. However, he was unable to reproduce his club form for the Belgians but still provided his team with two assist.

Although they were eliminated by World Cup finalist Argentina, Hazard looked to have done just enough to maintain his starting role amongst his Chelsea team mates. At only 23, he still has room to grow into an even better player. Jose Mourinho should very well still see Hazard as having a major role to play in his bids to win the league.

Oscar (Brazil – Attacking Midfielder)

If we forget the 7-1 or 3-0 thrashing of Brazil, we can almost all agree that Oscar was one of their top performers at the World Cup. He managed two goals and two assist in seven matches for his side, including the one against the ruthless Germans.

Having been dropped by Jose Mourinho towards the end of the season, his display in Brazil is something that could possibly earn him back his first time place. The 22-year-old is seen as a player that has the will to succeed with Mourinho surely needing someone like that.

Andre Schurrle (Germany – Winger / Striker)

Andre Schurrle became living proof that Chelsea do not need to buy another striker to replace either Demaba Ba, Samuel Eto’o or Fernando Torres as he actually has want it takes to bag his side a goal. His World Cup record is quite impressive as he managed to score three and one assist despite coming on as a substitute for all his matches.

Jose Mourinho has already used Schurrle as a striker in the past and could even decide to deploy him in that position should he decide to rest Costa or Torres. His performance during the last few months of the Premier League campaign, along with a World Cup trophy, his place in the squad looks quite safe.

Diego Costa (Spain – Striker)

Diego Costa took La Liga as well as the Champions League by storm scoring 35 goals in 46 matches in the previous season. Everybody expected him to do the same for Spain at the World Cup, but that clearly wasn’t the case. He only played his nations first two matches, but was substituted off in both matches around the hour mark due to his inability to get into the game.

Many people began to question his performance and whether or not his form for Atletico Madrid was a onetime thing. However, Jose Mourinho will definitely give him the starting role as he believes Costa is the player to bring goals back to the club. If he can replicate his 35 goal scoring season for the Blues, his World Cup display will surely be forgotten.
