Love him or hate him, there is no denying that John Terry has had an extraordinary career. The former England skipper has rightly earned himself a reputation as one of the greatest ever centre-backs to grace the Premier League having won everything there is to win in English football with his boyhood club, Chelsea. In 710 appearances for the Blues, Terry has scored 66 goals while winning four Premier League titles, five FA Cups, three League Cups and, of a course, the Champions League along the way. The defender was even named PFA Player of the Year back in 2004/05 by his fellow peers and was picked in the PFA Team of the Century.

It seems, however, that Terry's tenure at the club at which he was once a ballboy is coming to an end, with his contract running out this coming summer and playing time becoming more and more limited under Chelsea's new boss Antonio Conte.

What's next for the veteran defender? A move to Majore League Soccer? Or even to a Premier League rival?

Regardless of his next big step, Terry, who turns 36 today, will always be remembered for these big moments... with not all of them so great.

Here are the THREE highs and the THREE lows of the no-nonsense defender's career ...

HIGH - First Premier League title

From boot boy to Premier League winner and captain. The retirement of Chelsea legend Marcel Desailly paved the way for young Terry to step up and take the captain's armband, which was given to him by then manager Jose Mourinho. In his first season, the Englishman guided Chelsea to their first ever Premier League title and first top-flight trophy in 50 years, in what can only be described as astounding fashion.

Chelsea registered the best ever defensive record in Football League (yes, Football League) history that season, as well as the highest ever amount of clean sheets and goals scored in a Premier League season. Not bad for a first campaign as captain, eh?

LOW - That Penalty

If you had to pick one moment more memorable than any other in Terry's career, unfortunately for him it would be this one. Bad memories always seem to linger a little longer and heavier than the good ones, after all.

2008 Champions League Final - Moscow. Chelsea vs. Manchester United. The game had finished 1-1 after extra-time and penalties loomed. It was Terry's turn. This penalty would win them the trophy. A calamitous slip and a million plus memes later, Terry had forever immortalised himself as a Manchester United hero as his penalty missed, leaving United to claim the trophy for themselves.

HIGH - Champions League 2012

terry

Vengeance would come for Terry, however, later in his career, as Chelsea did indeed go on to win their first ever Champions League trophy during the 2011/12 season under Roberto Di Matteo.

Instrumental as ever, Terry was a key part of the side that defended so well throughout the competition and against all odds beat a host of Europe's elite to take home the trophy. There was one catch in the victory, however...

LOW - Champions League semi-final 2012

After the disappointment of 2008, Terry was once again met with disappointment in 2012, despite his side winning the Champions League this year. The defender's awful off-the-ball kicking of Alexis Sanchez during the semi-final second leg at the Nou Camp saw him receive a red card, meaning he would miss the final.

Terry left the field almost in tears, and later apologised publicly to his fellow team-mates, fans and probably to himself too for letting everybody down. While he celebrated the victory over Bayern Munich after Didier Drogba's winning penalty, the pain was evident as he missed out on what might have been his last chance at glory.

HIGH - Captain Fantastic

Every child's boyhood dream - or so you'd think, anyway - is to captain their country. On 10 August 2006, Steve McClaren named Terry as the England captain, succeeding David Beckham.

His dream went from great to greater as on his debut as skipper, he netted the opening goal in a 4-0 drubbing of Greece. While only a friendly, the result and achievement was a landmark for Terry who went on to captain England at two major tournaments.

LOW - Stripped of Captaincy

As it seems with much of Terry's career, the huge highs are seemingly followed by awful lows, more often than not related to each other in one way or another. After the honour of being named England captain, the captaincy was later stripped from him by Fabio Capello - justly or unjustly - for reasons regarding his personal life.

An alleged four-month affair with England team-mate Wayne Bridge's ex-girlfriend sent the tabloids into over-drive and suddenly everybody was more focused on Terry's antics off the field rather than his performance on it.
