The Copa America is only a couple of weeks away, in what promises to be an exciting and attack-focussed tournament.

It will also be an excellent opportunity for Premier League clubs to run the rule over a number of potential new signings, with world-beaters and emerging talents sure to be on show in the competition in Chile.

Chelsea have romped their way to a league and cup double this season, with Jose Mourinho’s squad showing no visible signs of weakness.

Despite the star-studded nature of the west London contingent, the Blues are likely to add one or two players of quality ahead of next season, where they will look to press forward with retaining their domestic dominance and put in more of a challenge in Europe.

With the Copa America in mind, here are three potential new additions for Chelsea this summer...

Nicolas Otamendi

The Argentina international has been starring for Valencia this season and looks odds-on to start for Tata Martino’s side at the heart of the team’s defence this summer.

The 27-year-old has been linked with a move to Manchester United in recent weeks and months, but there is certainly an argument for Chelsea making a move for him ahead of next season.

A dominant and imposing figure, Otamendi has been a key reason for Valencia’s improved campaign and is a natural talisman in any team he plays in.

Although the Blues may have the likes of Kurt Zouma lined up as John Terry’s long-term replacement, the capture of Otamendi would bolster the club’s defensive options and pose as an impressive new addition.

Roberto Firmino

Brazil are undergoing something of a transitional period following their underwhelming World Cup campaign, with a host of new players brought into the national fold by head coach Dunga.

Arguably the most impressive is Hoffenheim’s attacking midfield starlet Roberto Firmino, who has been consistently delivering for the modest Bundesliga club over the last two seasons.

Although Firmino has been mentioned as a possible target for Arsenal, his versatility and vision means he would be another canny and dangerous addition at Stamford Bridge.

With his national compatriot Oscar not having his best season for the Blues, Firmino’s presence would give Mourinho another excellent option in the number ten role.

Jackson Martinez

Although Diego Costa is Chelsea’s attacking talisman and a player that will continue to dominate the number nine jersey for the English champions, the Blues are likely to be in the market for a back-up this summer.

With Didier Drogba ageing and unlikely to extend his spell at the West London club, another striker will be needed to complement the group.

Martinez has been a deadly finisher for Porto over the last two seasons and is widely acknowledged as a poacher of the highest degree.

With Loic Remy offering pace in behind as an alternative to Costa, the Colombia international’s positional play and killer eye for goal would be a shrewd purchase to give Chelsea three contrasting options in attack.
