In what was billed as the latest clash of two of the biggest Premier League managers and two rivals looking to challenge at the top of the league, only one side appeared to turn up - and it wasn't Chelsea.

The game on Friday night at Stamford Bridge was preceded by an impressive light show but in all honesty that was the brightest thing the club conjured all evening as from the first minute the Blues looked completely overawed by Liverpool and their intensity.

It was the latest great away performance at a big side to go into the Reds' ever-growing portfolio but also a sobering reminder for Chelsea that they have some way to go to fully banish the performances of last season.

It looked a real mismatch on the pitch at the Bridge and even when Chelsea did get a goal, they rarely threatened thereafter. They've a big game against Arsenal this weekend and Antonio Conte will hope Friday's performance is just a blip whilst also expecting these three players to actually turn up...

Diego Costa

Despite his goal the Spaniard looked a shadow of the player that tormented Swansea only a week before. He was quiet for the whole game in all truthfulness and whilst a lack of service is partly to blame, he should have tried to get involved a bit more. In these games he's usually at his bruising best but he looked almost intimidated by the Reds defence at times.

Hazard has started the season pretty strongly but this performance was a throwback to last year, something the Blues fans will be hoping is a one off. He never really got a foothold in the game and as we saw in the last campaign when that happens Chelsea are usually in trouble. The Belgian scored a great solo effort in this fixture towards the end of last season but never looked like doing that on Friday.

Matic did well to set the goal up for Chelsea but he was aided by the Reds' defence switching off to let him in. Apart from that, he was pretty immobile throughout the evening leaving many desperate to see Cesc Fabregas come on well before he actually did. Whether Conte persists with him in this more advanced role remains to be seen but after this game the indicators are he shouldn't.
