The time has finally arrived for Roy Hodgson to name his England squad for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. There has been much debate surrounding a number of decisions that Hodgson faced, and the Shaw-Cole debate was one of the selections that had sparked off the biggest debate.
When the news broke last night that Hodgson was set to axe Chelsea full-back, Ashley Cole, in favour of Southampton’s Luke Shaw, there was an explosion of discontent on Twitter.
The 107-capped international has since announced his retirement, with his acceptance of being omitted from Hodgson’s squad being far more graceful than Rio Ferdinand’s two years ago.
Here is just some of the outcry from the Twittersphere.
Ashley Cole’s goal-line clearances will be misses at Brazil. He’s terrific at that.

Ashley Cole showed great dignity in his international retirement after being axed from World Cup squad. I’d have taken Cole over Luke Shaw. — John Cross (@johncrossmirror) May 12, 2014
Leavin out Ashley Cole dumbest thing I’ve seen in ages smh I cud say more but I won’t — StarboyNathan (@StarboyNathan) May 11, 2014
Have to say I think I’d have taken Ashley Cole. Suspect such experience will be needed in England’s defence

For me ashley cole is better defensively than both shaw and baines, they are more likely to get found out against the good wingers
