Victor Moses' season-long loan from Chelsea to Liverpool has hardly panned out how either club would have hoped for. In the current campaign, the Nigerian international has simply gone from being a rotation option at Stamford Bridge to a squad player at Anfield.

Having failed to convince Brendan Rodgers of his merits as a first choice attacker, surely Moses is living on borrowed time on both Merseyside and at Chelsea under Jose Mourinho?

The 'Special One' has proven notoriously difficult to please since his second coming in London. Despite being voted the club's player of the season just last year, Juan Mata was dispensed with for failing to adapt to Mourinho's philosophy. The Chelsea manager has frequently bemoaned the profligate nature of his three striking options whilst PFA Young Player of the Year Eden Hazard was dropped on Sunday after failing to track his runners midweek.

With the greatest respect to Moses' own merits, it is hard to see the winger impressing Mourinho when others evidently more talented have struggled to convince. Rodgers spoke of potentially making the move to Merseyside permanent back in January but further movements on that front have gone cold.

At the time, the loan move made sense for both parties.  Despite having just a year left on his Wigan Athletic contract, Chelsea still stumped up a reported £9 million to land their man back in 2012. The winger's most successful contribution at the Londoners came in the Europa League, with statistics from ESPN noting that the current Liverpool loanee netted an impressive four times in six appearances.

Moses displayed glimpses of talent in his debut campaign at Stamford Bridge but not enough to suggest he was ready to displace any of Chelsea's first choice attacking options. Therefore, a temporary move to acquire more first-team action made perfect sense.

Liverpool's decision to loan the Nigerian international also was deemed a good move at the time. The Merseysiders' squad depth was and still is seriously lacking, especially in attack. Rodgers was praised for drafting Moses in as a versatile alternative to supplement the 'SAS' and Coutinho.

The loanee began the season in the first team, either at the tip of a midfield diamond or out wide. But Moses struggled and was gradually usurped in the side by the re-emergent Raheem Sterling. The attacking midfielder has scored just twice during his loan spell and last started a match for the Reds back in January in the FA Cup victory at Bournemouth.

Liverpool need to strengthen their depths of their squad in the summer but talk of any permanent switch for Moses has died down. Rodgers has not spoken on the matter for some time now and a quick search on Twitter reveals that the fans are less than positive about the winger. Moses' embarrassing miss on Monday night at Selhurst Park has unsurprisingly made him an unpopular figure on one half of Merseyside.

So, what's next for this Liverpool and Chelsea misfit?

Moses' fortunes could all change in the summer with Nigeria at the World Cup. Despite the winger's troubles at club level, the Super Eagles' manager Stephen Keshi has already stated that he plans to use him in Brazil. Like so many other players, Moses will surely be looking to use the competition as a showcase for his talents to facilitate a summer move.

Although he is most certainly not flavour of the month right now, Moses' struggles this season shouldn't mean that his previous form should be overlooked. In his time at Wigan and in glimpses at Chelsea, the twenty three year old displayed a genuine potential that could yet still be realised.

The Nigerian international is a decent Premier League performer that is in desperate need of a move as well as a strong World Cup showing. Likely to be available in the summer for a reduced fee, certain managers in the top flight would be wise to take a punt upon Moses next season.

Just don't expect it to be Mourinho or Rodgers.
