It’s Chelsea’s worst ever start to a Premier League season, and Jose Mourinho’s worst start to a season in his entire managerial history. The Blues are 15th in the table and things are not looking good for last season’s champions.

Nonetheless, it is still quite puzzling that pundits and journalists alike are writing Chelsea off just ten games into the season. Chelsea can still boast of one of the best squads in the Premier League, and Mourinho is one of the greatest manager’s of all time.

Perhaps Chelsea and Mourinho were complacent going into the new season, last summer’s transfer window would certainly suggest that this was the case, as Chelsea resisted the temptation to sign big, with the exception of their failed bid for John Stones.

Despite this, no one at the start of the season would have predicted that Chelsea would be amongst the relegation rabble, but here we are, ten games in and Mourinho is on the verge of being sacked.

However, don’t write Chelsea off just yet, Mourinho is one of football’s great dramatists, and I wouldn’t put it past the Portuguese to manufacture Chelsea’s own uphill battle for a more heroic end of season finish. Despite his act of silence at the weekend, ‘the Special One’ loves the limelight; he knows that if Chelsea win the title this season then it will be his greatest achievement in football.

Jose has always written his own scripts, from reviving Rafael Benitez’s failing Inter Milan to joining Real Madrid to reignite his rivalry with Barcelona, there is always a sub-plot with Mourinho, and this year he wants to be the comeback king.

If he keeps his job, he’s only ten points off the lead with a transfer window to come. Arsenal, Man United and Man City, although top of the pile, are far from convincing, and Mourinho must secretly smell blood.

Louis van Gaal and even Arsene Wenger would have been sacked by now for leading their respective clubs to Chelsea’s current predicament, and Brendan Rodgers has already been sacked for performing only marginally better than Mourinho.

There is currently a state of chaos around Stamford Bridge, although there is also the feeling that Mourinho has the situation under control. He has reiterated many times that he is the best man for the job, and few can argue with him. Only time will tell if this is the start of something special or the beginning of the end for Mourinho and Chelsea.

One thing is for sure, though; it’s going to be fascinating to watch.
