Russian champions Zenit St. Petersburg have confirmed their interest in Everton talisman Marouane Fellaini.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, a Zenit spokesperson stated that management are looking to use the January transfer window to strengthen the midfield at the Petrovsky Stadium.

"The signings will be players of very high quality. For example, the Belgium international Marouane Fellaini is on the list – he has proved himself in his games for Everton," a club spokesperson said.

In light of an exceptional start to the season, and a previous declaration that this could possibly be his last year at Goodison Park, Fellaini is proving to be the biggest transfer target in English football this January.

The Belgium international has thus far bagged eight goals in 13 games for the Toffees, with a crucial equaliser against Arsenal at home and the opening goal at the Etihad Stadium against Manchester City - two games where Fellaini’s brilliance earned two draws for the Merseyside club.

This hot streak in form has piqued the interests of some of the Premier League’s elite, with Chelsea said to be ready to launch a bid believed to be in the region of £20million.

The Blues will have to fend off interest from Zenit, who have openly stated their admiration for the Belgium star and are ready to proceed with negotiations as soon as the window opens.

Fellaini intends to play within a team competing for silverware next season, and both Chelsea and Zenit can offer the opportunity to win a major competition.
