Crystal Palace defender Pape Souare is concerned that he may never play football again following September's car accident.

The 26-year-old broke his thighbone and jaw when his Mercedes collided with another car on the M4 near London.

The Senegalese player was cut from the vehicle and airlifted to hospital, but thankfully his injuries were not life-threatening.

Palace manager Alan Pardew expected Souare to be out of action for around six months, but now the defender believes that he may never fully recover from his injuries.

"I don't know about my injury. I don't know if I can get back or not," Souare told BBC World Service. "I just put everything in the hands of God and we will see."

"I got my leg broke, and my jaw, and I couldn't eat for the first month, but now I can eat, I can try to eat a little bit. The thing about my leg, it's getting there. I'm trying to do the work to make it stronger with the physio at the club.

"I remember the helicopter coming to get me. I remember the door on my leg. I remember the guy who was coming to talk to me and I said to him I'll keep in touch with him as he helped me a lot before the helpers come. I remember they cut the roof to take me out. I was very lucky because that was a very crazy shock."

It would be a devastating blow to the defender, who joined Palace from Lille in January 2015, and went on to make 34 Premier League appearances last season.

At 26, the footballer has played for four different clubs. He began his career at Diambars before moving to Lille, where he was shipped out on loan to Reims in the 2012-13 campaign.

Meanwhile, Palace are having a torrid time in the top flight as they are one place above the relegation zone on goal difference alone after 13 games.
