He filled in admirably at centre-back as he has been required to do on a number of occasions in the recent past. He was always going to come out second best in aerial duels against Andy Carroll but he managed successfully, alongside Phil Jones, to limit Carroll’s goalscoring chances. Ultimately, his performance at centre-back will have little influence on Hodgson but he has at least proven some versatility and his defensive discipline. A good United run until May will likely see Carrick make the plane, but right now he is just behind others.
