In wild contrast to their status within English football today, Manchester City were a fairly drab outfit during the mid 1990’s. In Kinkladze’s inaugural season where he arrived almost completely unknown, the side went the first three months without winning a match, before the Georgian’s first goal for the club secured a 1-0 victory against Aston Villa. By December, he was widely regarded as the star of the City side, with the club’s fixture against Middlesbrough being billed as Kinkladze vs. Juninho. Won the player of the season award at the end of the campaign, which had seen the club relegated, and was voted by Boro fans as the ‘best opposing player of the season’. A mention must go as well to his wonderful solo goal against Southampton that year which saw him round three players before neatly dinking the ball over the advancing Dave Beasant.
