Everton are in talks with Samuel Eto’o, with the striker’s proposed move to Liverpool now off, according to The Mirror.

The Cameroonian veteran is currently a free agent after being released by Chelsea, and despite interested from the Middle East he’s desperate to stay in England.

A move to Liverpool was mooted at the end of last week, but with the Reds having all but secured the arrival of Mario Balotelli the transfer now looks to be dead.

This has put the Toffees in the driving seat, with reports suggesting that they are talking to the 33-year-old.

Eto’o himself wants to £100,000-per-week in wages, which would make him Everton’s highest paid player.

But the Merseysiders will look to negotiate him down, with the security of a two-year contract thought to be a tool they may use.

The African star has lucrative offers on the table from Qatar, yet staying in the Premier League after one season with Chelsea is understood to be his aim.

Roberto Martinez is keen to get the ageing goalscorer in, with the added fixtures from Europa League football set to stretch his squad this season.
