Napoli have joined Everton in the battle to sign Porto midfielder Fernando, according to talkSPORT.

The Brazilian is expected to be one of the most highly coveted midfielders of the next transfer window, as he is available for a cut price when his contract expires in the summer.

He has attracted interest from a host of top European clubs, including Juventus, Inter Milan and Monaco, and now it appears Napoli have joined the pack.

Rafael Benitez is desperate to recruit a new holding midfielder, and has also been linked with his former Liverpool stars Javier Mascherano and Lucas Leiva.

Roberto Martinez is hopeful he can lure the Brazilian to the Premier League, but knows he faces a huge challenge to do so.

Benitez is said to have already dispatched scouts to watch the 26-year-old in action, and is poised to make a bid as soon as the January transfer window opens.

Fernando was thought to be on the verge of completing a move to Goodison Park in the summer, only for the deal to break down at the last minute.

Martinez is hopeful his team can continue their excellent start to the season which has seen the Toffees take 19 points from their opening 10 games, as it will make persuading top players to join much easier in January.
