Roberto Martinez is poised to complete his first singing since taking over at Everton according to The Independent, who claim the club have pipped Newcastle to the signing of Wigan striker Arouna Kone.
The club are expected to announce the £5million signing of the player shortly, which will see Martinez reunite with the striker who served him so well at Wigan last season.
Despite relegation, Kone was a stand out performer for the Latics last season, scoring 11 Premier League goals and contributing to their famous FA Cup win after Martinez signed him for just £2million from Spanish club Levante.
The pair now look set to work together again, but this time at Goodison Park, despite a late attempt from Newcastle to hijack the deal.
Both clubs were given permission to speak to Kone after both activated the £5million release clause in the player’s contract, although his relationship with Martinez always meant the Merseyside club were the favourites to complete the deal.
The next big task for Martinez looks set to be holding onto full back Leighton Baines who has already attracted a bid from Manchester United, and are understood to be preparing another.
Marouane Fellaini is another whose future is somewhat up in the air. The Belgian finished as the club’s top scorer last season with 12 goals, but Martinez is concerned a club may soon trigger his £23.5million release clause, with Arsenal the team most strongly linked at present.
