Fortunately for Everton (and Belgium national team coach Marc Wilmots), the Premier League has two goalscoring Belgian powerhouses in its ranks. Measuring in at 6 foot 3, exceptionally strong and mobile, Aston Villa star Christian Benteke is virtually a carbon copy of Chelsea loanee Romelu Lukaku.
Paul Lambert sourced the 23 year-old from FC Genk in summer 2012 for a mere £7million and he quickly proved to be the Villa Park gaffer’s most cost-effective coup, racking up an incredible 19 goals in his debut Premier League campaign.
The Belgium international struggled for form in the first half of the season due to a six-week injury layoff, but he’s still managed to find ten goals in 25 league appearances and fire the Villians to mid-table safety.
Most impressively, Benteke has developed a knack for scoring against the Premier League’s bigger sides – he’s netted against Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Newcastle this season – which could play a huge factor in the Toffees’ Champions League qualification bid next year.
But Villa are well aware of the Beastly Belgian’s market value and last summer rated him at £25million, before tying Benteke down to a new long-term contract.
With that in mind, the Red Devils forward could be out of Everton’s financial reach this summer, but if they can afford Benteke’s target man services, he’s certainly worth the lofty investment.
