Romelu Lukaku has sparked controversy this week with his comments about wanting to move back to a ‘top club’,  asreported in the Evening Standard. Obviously, this has angered Everton fans partly due to the lack of commitment to the club and the fact that Lukaku hasn’t exactly been in great form.

The big Belgian forward was one of Europe’s hottest prospects when he was scoring on a consistent basis for Anderlecht. Lukaku bagged 33 goals in 73 appearances, earning him a £17 million move to Chelsea.

Still at a very young age, he lacked first team experience and was sent out on loan to West Bromwich Albion. It was a spell that was incredibly successful for the striker as he averaged a goal every other game. It became immediately clear that Lukaku was a very capable striker at Premier League level. His second loan spell was to current side Everton, where he continued to produce the same goalscoring form that made him such a hit at West Brom.

Lukaku was developing a reputation as one of the best young strikers in world football and it felt like only a matter of time before he would break into the first team at Chelsea. However, for whatever reason, Lukaku’s chances of playing regular, first team football at Stamford Bridge under Mourinho were minimal.

It never seemed like the ‘Special One’ was overly keen on the 21-year-old and it wasn’t long before his future as a Chelsea player was in doubt. Whether his lack of success at Chelsea has affected the player badly remains to be seen, but the striker was always desperate to impress for the club he admired as a boy. He made a £28 million move to Everton after his successful loan spell and there was a weight of expectation surrounding the forward as he now had the hefty price tag to live up to as the 2014/15 season kicked off.

After a disappointing World Cup campaign, Lukaku has struggled to replicate the goalscoring form that made him one of the best strikers in the Premier League. He has only scored seven Premier League goals in 25 appearances this season and his recent comments suggest that the striker is desperate for a return to a top club like Chelsea.

Although there is nothing wrong with having ambition, it is quite poor timing from the striker due to the fact that Everton are not having a particularly good season so far. To his credit, Lukaku responded in the best manner by scoring a hat-trick against BSC Young Boys in the Europa League. Everton fans will be hoping that the striker starts to really pick up his form heading into the latter stages of the season.

It is important that Lukaku continues to perform in the professional manner that has made his short career so successful thus far. Still only 21, the forward has all the time in the world to make it to the top and his recent comments are a bit unnecessary considering the fact that he is still one of the best young strikers around. Instead of focusing on earning a move to a big club, Lukaku should aim to repay the £28 million record investment Everton paid for him in the summer. Then, and only then, can he re-evaluate his career.
