Manchester United were pegged back by Chelsea in the most dramatic of circumstances today at Stamford Bridge.

Despite a performance of improved creativity and energy, the Red Devils were denied a landmark win over the fallen Premier League champions by Diego Costa late on.

Jesse Lingard scored a wonderful swivelling volley to put his side ahead just after the interval, which they deserved at the time.

After that however, the visitors appeared to retreat from the foot somewhat and allowed the game to open up.

While the Blues plugged away and perhaps were good value for the share of spoils, the late goal will no doubt effect Louis van Gaal that it will his countryman, Guus Hiddink.

Chelsea remain unbeaten since the departure of Jose Mourinho will take confidence from the fact they continued to battle until very late on.

It may be too little too late from the side, but they are beginning to show exactly the sort of mental strength that won them the title last year.

Here are FIVE things we learned.

BORTHWICK-JACKSON SOLID

Cameron Borthwick-Jackson

Ok, so Cameron Borthwick-Jackson will take some stick for his role in Costa's late equaliser, but the 19-year old was impressive elsewhere.

The left-back is another to have graduated from the club's famed academy and was solid up until the very end, where his lapse in concentration allowed the Chelsea man space.

As a young player learning his craft, the teenager at least provides a glimmer of hope at full-back, amid the plethora of injuries dogging van Gaal all season.

COSTA SACKING JOSE WORTH IT

Diego Costa (centre)

Diego Costa has six goals in his last seven games. While he's got some way to go from righting the many wrongs he wrote at the start of the season, the 27-year old is showing the sort of form that made him such a force last time out.

He was a nuisance all game, mixing his physical presence with fancy footwork in order to round Chris Smalling on a number of occasions.

Though he was denied by the excellence of David De Gea, the Spanish star is back to his best.

DEPAY SLOPPY

DepayMUFC

Memphis Depay was left in acres of space on the wing in the dying moments, with a simple pass to Morgan Schneiderlin looking to play the Frenchman in.

The £25m man could have kept a hold of the ball in order to waste time, but the ball looked so routine, you cannot blame him for making it.

What you can blame the Dutchman for however, is the sloppiness of the pass, that led to an interception and ultimately afforded the Blues the chance to get up the pitch.

If the former PSV man is ever going to prove his worth, he needs to cut things like that out.

LINGARD IN WITH A EUROS SHOUT?

Jesse Lingard (centre)

Roy Hodgson was in attendance today in order to run the rule over some of his key players, such as Wayne Rooney and company.

However, Jesse Lingard continued his recent run of good form with an excellent goal.

Controlling the ball on the turn, the England under-21 star swivelled his body and hit a half volley on the turn. A wonderful effort to follow up good goals against Stoke and Newcastle in recent weeks.

Could he make the Euros? With 13 games to go, the former Derby loan star is doing his very best, that much is for sure.

MARTIAL LOVING THE LEFT

martial

Louis van Gaal attracted some criticism for switching Anthony Martial to left wing duties after the French teenager began life in Manchester with a bang through the middle.

However, the 19-year old Frenchman is growing in confidence in wider areas with every passing game it seems.

Whether he's taking on full-backs akin to a natural winger, or cutting inside to provide support with Wayne Rooney, his genuine pace provides a real threat to the opposition.
