A tearful Rafael Benitez was introduced as Real Madrid's new manager Wednesday after inking a three-year deal to take over from Carlo Ancelotti, who was sacked after just two seasons at the Bernabeu despite winning the 2013-14 Champions League.

Benitez began his coaching career at Real Madrid back in 1993 as a youth team manager at the club. He called the signing of his new contract "coming home."

However, joyful the Spaniard's return to Los Blancos may be, he has his work cut out for him this summer. Madrid failed to win any major trophies this season, and fans and club executives are hungry to return to glory.

Here are three things that Benitez must do in this summer transfer window if he is to lift Madrid back out of their season-long slump...

Keep Bale away from Manchester United

Gareth Bale

With United star goalkeeper David De Gea set to move to Real Madrid this summer, there have been reports that midfielder Gareth Bale might be sent over to the Red Devils as a bartering chip.

Benitez was quoted earlier in the summer as saying that he would like to build his team around Bale, but the Welshman's sub par performance this season has club higher-ups pushing for his sale.

While it may be out of his hands, Benitez would be wise to fight for Bale to have another chance.

The combination of Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo was deadly two seasons ago, and Benitez must not forgo the opportunity to let the pair fall back into rhythm again.

Beef up the defence

Laurent Koscielny

Madrid has long been known for explosive attackers, but the team has suffered at the back recently.

With Marcelo's recent lower back injury, Benitez is left with Sergio Ramos and Pepe as his main defenders. Pepe has just one year left on his contract, and Ramos two.

It would help assure Benitez's future at the club if he could invest in a long-term signing at centre back. The new manager has been linked to Arsenal's Laurent Koscielny.

Get some Sterling silverware

Sterling1

Liverpool striker Raheem Sterling has been outstanding at Anfield this season, leading the struggling side with 11 goals in all competitions, second only to the great Steven Gerrard.

He also claimed four Man of the Match Awards this season.

At just 20-years-old, Sterling has been vocal about wanting to leave the Reds and win some titles, something he could very well do at Madrid. Benitez can also use his Liverpool connections to make this transfer happen.
