Premier League heavyweights Liverpool and Arsenal somehow pulsated their way to a scoreless draw on Monday night at the Emirates. Both sides poked and prodded at one another in an effort to break the stalemate, but ultimately in vain. Arsenal, particularly, are said to be in the hunt for a new striker in order to provide a solution to results like this.

Both Edinson Cavani and Karim Benzema are rumoured to be high on the Gunners hit list, but perhaps a look closer to home would provide a better option. Anfield star Daniel Sturridge is currently suffering multiple injury problems, having struggled to get a substantial run of games in Brendan Rodgers’ side since the end of the thrilling 2013/14 season.

However, the England star is the ideal type of striker that is oh so needed in North London. Though he is not yet at the standard of one time Arsenal target, Luis Suarez, the 25-year old would fit the bill for Arsene Wenger.

With Theo Walcott and Oliver Giroud on the complete opposite ends of the striker scale, Sturridge can offer killing two birds with one stone. Though Walcott has pace to burn, he struggles to lead the line in the way Giroud so often does. The Frenchman’s biggest issue is his inability to run behind opposition defences to truly launch a title challenge.

Wenger needs a striker who can offer an answer to both questions. As a ‘Number 9’, there are few better in the league. He can both drop deep and drift wide, creating space for the Gunners’ plethora of incisive attacking midfielders.

The ice-cool finishing he brings to any side is perhaps his biggest quality. He was both fortunate and unfortunate to play alongside Suarez, having no doubt prospered next to the Uruguayan, though unable to truly be valued as important as he was.

Danny Welbeck has been unable to replicate international form since his move from Manchester United, so a move for his England colleague makes sense. With Benzema set to stay in Madrid, and doubts over Cavani’s ability to cut it at the very top level, Sturridge can lead the line.

A goal scoring record of 35 goals in 55 games while on Merseyside is astonishing. Had he not been so depilated by injuries so far in his career, the former Man City youngster would surely be a £50m+ player.

Though a move in unlikely, stranger things have happened. Should the Reds again miss out on Champions League football, surely a deal could be struck. Suarez and Raheem Sterling have both left the club for pastures new, and Sturridge could follow suit.

If Arsenal are truly going to challenge at the top of the league, prizing a rivals top striker away from them in order to air their title assault is exactly the sort of thing they need to do. The Robin van Persie fiasco should tell them that.
