With a lot of work to do before this week's Europa League showdown with Villarreal, Jurgen Klopp chose his side tactically for their Premier League tie against Swansea City on Sunday.

Yet things didn't go at all to plan, and the Reds came away from Liberty Stadium well and truly humbled following a 3-1 defeat to a side that has flirted with relegation for most of the season.

The mentality from Klopp was to preserve players for Thursday's Europa League tie, but by throwing in the youth and leaving half-a-dozen first-team players out, his side really struggled. It could have been far worse than the three goals they eventually conceeded, but what would have come of a shock to Klopp would have been the form and attitude shown by Daniel Sturridge throughout.

The injury plagued striker looked distinctly average and unhappy in the south of Wales, and when he stormed down the tunnel on his own at full-time, it left many Liverpool fans wandering where his future indeed lies.

He's been well-and-truly overshadowed by the in-form Divock Origi for a few weeks now and he did little to further his claim for a starting place at Anfield on Thursday, so why is he looking so unhappy?

He's out of form to start with. 11 goals this season isn't a poor return, but he's had injury problems again this campaign, which has limited him to only 21 appearances for the Reds. At 26, these really should be the years for Sturridge to become one of the best strikers in the Premier League, but it's all been a little tepid from the former Chelsea man. It was widely expected he would be the star to lead Klopp's Anfield revolution, but again he's been injury and has had to play second fiddle to the hugely impressive Origi- whom many Liverpool fans disregarded before the season had begun.

Part of the problems seems to be that Sturridge doesn't quite fit the Klopp style of play. He wants high-pressing, hard-working strikers, but Sturridge seems more about waiting on the shoulder for opportunities to eventually come his way. Ask Christian Benteke - if there is anyone that doesn't understand the Klopp philosophy it's him.

But is Sergio Aguero the best presser in the Premier League? Absolutely not and he scores for fun week after week, which suggests Sturridge may still have a future at Anfield after all. But his body language is all over the place and he doesn't look like a man that is absolutely loving his football, which is the biggest worry.

He's going to struggle to be involved in the EUROs thanks to the mesmerising form shown by Jamie Vardy and Harry Kane this season, and whilst this isn't his fault directly, it shows some people have stepped up their games whilst he perhaps hasn't.

It's a poor example to set off down the tunnel after a defeat in front of such a young side, and it could be suggesting Sturridge could be set to leave Merseyside.
