Belgian defender Jan Vertonghen has backed young team-mate Divock Origi to shine in the Premier League, amid talk that Liverpool are set to tie up a deal for his signature.

The 19-year-old striker has seen his reputation skyrocket in recent weeks following some impressive displays at the World Cup – including a match winning goal against Russia in the group stage.

Liverpool and Tottenham have both been linked with the teenager, but reports from France have suggested that the former are close to sealing a swoop for his services.

The Merseysiders are said to be ready to pay around £10m for the promising hit-man and will loan him back to Ligue 1 giants Lille for next season as part of the agreement.

Vertonghen believes that Origi is a supremely talented youngster and that he has the potential and ability to hold his own for a top Premier League side:

“He has the qualities to play for a good team in the Premier League and I think he shows it every game,” he is quoted by Goal.

“He has come on in every game, and he’s changed games for us.

“He has the qualities to go to a bigger league, but obviously with Lille playing in the Champions League we’ll see.”
