Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers believes his team should have taken all three points during their Premier League clash with Manchester City which ended in a 2-2 draw.

The Reds fell behind to an Edin Dzeko strike after 23 minutes, but hit back with goals from Daniel Sturridge and Steven Gerrard.

They looked to be on course to take the win, but a Pepe Reina error allowed Sergio Aguero to finish from a tight angle.

Rodgers believes that his team are showing signs of improvement and that they were unlucky not to beat City at the Etihad Stadium:

"It was an outstanding performance at a notoriously difficult place for teams to even score a goal, I don't think they've conceded here (in 2013).” He told the club’s official website.

"What was important for me was to see the confidence of the players, the desire, the quality and the efficiency of their game. I don't think anyone would deny that we probably deserved to win that game.”

The Northern Irishman was however disappointed by the manner in which his team lost their lead.

He refused to blame individuals and went on to suggest that his team will grow in strength after the setback:

"The disappointing thing was that it typified our season, really, where we've been outstanding in our game and the model of our work but mistakes have cost us.

"That's all a part of our growth.

"I was really disappointed for them because they'd put so much into the game. Obviously Aguero's finish is unbelievable but from our perspective we're bitterly disappointed he was even in that position.

"It was a mistake, everyone was clear on that, but I can't fault the players. I thought they were absolutely brilliant today. We showed great character.”

Liverpool are now nine points adrift of Tottenham in fourth place, but face winnable back-to-back league games at Anfield against West Brom and Swansea.
