Ex-Liverpool star Ray Houghton believes that Dejan Lovren would be the perfect signing to sort out the club’s shaky backline.
The Reds are thought to be closing in on a £20m deal to make the Croatian their third signing from Southampton this summer, with rumours in the player’s homeland indicating that an agreement has been reached between the sides.
Further to this, Lovren himself has said that his head is “already at Liverpool”, fuelling talk that he is ready to spurn interest from Arsenal and Tottenham to end his one-year stay at St. Mary’s Stadium.
Liverpool have addressed attacking problems in recent weeks by spending over £60m, and now backline additions are said to be in the pipeline.
Brendan Rodgers’ men conceded a staggering 50 goals as they finished runners-up to Manchester City in the title race last term, which cost them the chance of a first crown in the Premier League era.
Houghton – a hero at Anfield – believes that Lovren is the ideal player to help them right to wrongs of 2013/14:
“I know Lovren is one of those (players Liverpool are tracking) from Southampton and I think he’d be a great addition.” He is quoted by the Daily Star.
“I looked at him a lot last season. I think he’s a very good defender and Liverpool need defensive options.
“They didn’t win the title last season not because they didn’t score enough goals but because they didn’t defend well enough in the last four games of the season.”
