With the January transfer window already fast approaching for those operating among the English top-flight and beyond this season, Liverpool Football Club and their newly installed manager have once again seen themselves linked with a whole host of top European talent.

Although the Reds notoriously wasted a great deal of resources under the ill-fated Brendan Rodgers reign on Merseyside, Jurgen Klopp is ultimately yet to put his official stamp on the squad available to him at Anfield. With the January window almost upon us however, the enigmatic German tactician is bound to source one or two more assets to compliment the current Liverpool team.

When the Premier League club were initially linked with Schalke’s up and coming talent – Leroy Sane – in recent weeks, such an outcome hardly proved all that surprising with all things considered. Klopp was seemingly always going to be linked with several of his promising countrymen this term, even if Sane isn’t exactly the most well-known German operator currently doing the business out there.

But considering the fact Sane has already represented his side extensively in the Bundesliga and within the ever testing realms of Champions League football, maybe Reds fans shouldn’t be writing this particular transfer story off completely. The promising attacking midfielder has even received a recent call-up to the German national side of late – which isn’t too bad for someone who hasn’t even turned 20 years of age yet.

Leroy Sane seems like a direct sort of player who also respects the technical side of the game. As an attacking midfielder who sometimes drifts out to the right-flank on occasion, this is a player who most football fans would honestly love to watch a few years down the line.

Whilst he by no means represents anything near the finished article at this early stage in his career, the future nonetheless looks very bright indeed for the young German attacker.

When it comes to driving right at the heart of the opposition’s back-line on a pretty frequent basis, impressing his respective fan-base with a fair amount of trickery in the final third – as well as simply providing his manager with a decent range of goals and assists for someone of his age – Leroy Sane has so far proven himself to be on the verge of something truly special.

Liverpool would therefore seem like an ideal place for the youngster to start developing his trade even further. Alongside the likes of Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Jordan Ibe, Sane would seemingly fit in perfectly. He represents the attractive and entertaining type of player the Liverpool hierarchy have been aiming for of late – and as Klopp was notoriously successful at bringing through young talents to great effect during his time as Borussia Dortmund boss – surely all the right factors seem to be in place here.

However, although Liverpool have certainly aligned themselves with several promising players over the last few transfer windows, the Merseyside club have constantly come unstuck when it comes to agreeing a reasonable transfer fee for their targets. For a fee around the £10million mark for the emerging German star, the Reds would be well capable of completing such a deal with as little fuss as possible. Yet if Schalke nonetheless look to bump up their valuation of the 19-year-old between now and the start of the January transfer window, Liverpool should ultimately cast their attention elsewhere.

Leroy Sane could potentially go down as a smart option for the Reds this winter, but only for the right price. Liverpool should only really move for the Bundesliga youngster if Klopp believes that his current starting XI is strong enough to last the rest of the season – but if the money simply needs to be spent elsewhere – perhaps the Reds would be better off waiting this one out a little bit.

Once the January window eventually comes to a close, the summer transfer period will be just waiting around the corner after all...
