Emile Heskey wants his former club Liverpool to move for James Rodriguez following Luis Suarez’s move to Barcelona.
The Reds lost their talismanic striker yesterday after it had become apparent that the 27-year-old wanted a big move to Spain.
Barca are set to pay Liverpool close to £80m, which manager Brendan Rodgers will be handed to find a replacement and bolster his squad for a season of domestic and Champions League action.
Alexis Sanchez was thought to be the top target, but with the Chilean now an Arsenal player the Merseysiders will have to look elsewhere.
Rodriguez has been, arguably, the World Cup’s standout performer, with his six goals in five games having exposed his talents to a global audience.
The 23-year-old is by now means an unknown – Monaco signed him from Porto for around £40m last year – but his displays in recent weeks have attracted numerous potential suitors.
Heskey – a former Anfield striker – says that he would like to see his old side move for the silky South American if he’s available:
“Both Alexis Sanchez and James Rodriguez have lit up the World Cup,” he is quoted by the Daily Star.
“The latter is only 23, so you would get a lot of mileage out of him. James would be my number one [target] if Liverpool could get him.”
