Despite Liverpool looking as good as they have done since the famous title bid of 2013/14, there is one of area of the squad that continues to be their weak link.

The left-back position for the Reds has long been a problem and the situation is coming to a head this year with no player able to perform consistently in the role.

Alberto Moreno isn't the answer, and Jurgen Klopp agrees, with the Spanish wing-back only appearing in three Premier League games this term.

The situation is so perilous that it's James Milner who has spent the majority of the season on the left of defence, but that looks increasingly like a bad fit with the former England international being exposed by fast wide-men, which was evident last weekend against Bournemouth.

Klopp must make this a priority in January or risks killing Liverpool's ambitions before they're off the ground.

Here are FIVE players that we think could be the answer at left-back for Liverpool...

Faouzi Ghoulam

Last season Ghoulam was virtually ever-present in a talented Napoli side that finished second in Serie A. The left-back has been a star on the European scene for a while now, making the Europa League team of the year in 2015.

Bagging another assist this season during Napoli's Tuesday night trip to Benfica in the Champions League, the Algerian and his side are heading through to the Last 16 of the tournament as group winners.

An attacking threat, but also a defensively sound option, he'd be a perfect fit in Liverpool's free-flowing system.

Luke Shaw

Luke Shaw

This would be an incredible transfer should it come off given that Shaw plays for Liverpool's great rivals Manchester United - the last time the two clubs did transfer business together was in 1964 when Phil Chisnall moved to Anfield for £25,000.

Any deal for Shaw would, of course, be on a different level and attract an extraordinary level of attention, but that shouldn't put Klopp off.

Struggling to find his way at Man United under Mourinho, Shaw is still one of the most talented left-backs in the division on his day, and still just 21, there's plenty of untapped potential left in him. Perhaps the confidence that Klopp can instil in players is exactly what he needs...

Sead Kolasinac

A more defensively sound option than most of the left-backs on this list, Kolasinac would add a grit and determination to Liverpool's backline that is currently absent.

The Bosnia & Herzegovina international defender has played his part in six clean sheets for Schalke in twelve appearances this season. But, that's not to say he can't get himself forward - he's also contributed four assists and two goals.

With competition fierce at Schalke in this area, Liverpool would offer Kolasinac a new challenge in his career and the chance to make the position his own at a top European club.

Klopp would be getting a safe pair of hands and lord knows he needs that right now. Oh, and he's available for free in the summer, too.

Having risen from playing League One football at Tranmere and through the Championship at Ipswich, Aaron Cresswell has developed into one of the Premier League's top players in the position.

While injuries have hampered his first-team chances this season, a move to one of England's biggest clubs seems like a natural step for the player, who won his first international cap for England  just last month.

Cresswell has been a fans' favourite at all three of his clubs, winning club player of the year awards at both Ipswich and West Ham. Is he the one Klopp is looking for?

Jonas Hector

A regular in Germany's exceptional international side, Jonas Hector is a player who would undoubtedly improve the position at Liverpool.

The left-sided defender excels in an attacking sense, with the ability to surge forward from defence into midfield with the ball at his feet.

He's helped FC Koln to five clean sheets this season, too, and his side currently sit 7th in the Bundesliga, pushing for a European place.

He signed a contract extension in the summer after some intense transfer speculation, but a big money bid is likely to tempt both club and player over the coming windows. If he's available, it seems like a smart move to bring him to Anfield.
