While the FA Cup may lack the glamour of the Champions League or the Premier League, the nostalgia it provides leaves many a fan misty-eyed as the television credits play through some of the weird and wonderful former fixtures in the history of the competition.

Iconic as the world’s greatest domestic cup competition, its status at the top level of the English game might be under question but it is still adored by many.

Some may tire of the lovey-dovey nature that the coverage brings, yet it is hard not to remain a little in awe of the plucky underdog. The standard will seldom be the highest, but the drama will inevitably flow throughout the weekend of the famous Third Round.

Unfortunately, though, this weekend’s draw has not provided us with many classic-looking fixtures. TV scheduling naturally means the games are spread across the weekend, too.

Football FanCast thoroughly enjoy the nostalgia, however, so here are FIVE of the FA Cup’s biggest ever upsets…

West Brom vs Woking 1991

The Hawthorns was home to some ludicrous drama back in 1991. The Baggies were comfortably 1-0 up at half-time and looked set to rumble into the next round of the competition. Woking had some different ideas, though, and turned the game around in absurd fashion.

Tim Buzaglo scored a second half hat-trick to turn the game into a 4-2 victory for the non-league visitors, providing one of the all-time greatest upsets in FA Cup history.

Worcester vs Liverpool 1959

Liverpool were a second tier side back in the late 1950s, which was of course prior to their decades of domestic and European dominance. Facing non-league Worcester, they were still strong favourites though.

Quite a stark upset, then. Bill Shankly soon took over the ship at Anfield and, as they say, the rest is history. Not exactly the proudest moment in Liverpool’s history, this, but one that cannot be forgotten nonetheless.

Wrexham vs Arsenal 1992

Mickey Thomas had quite a career, representing several big clubs, but his greatest legacy is probably the free-kick he smashed in to knock Arsenal out of the third round back in 1992. A clip that would appear on montages for decades to come and rightly so.

Someone, somewhere, will have chucked a tenner on Wrexham to knock Arsenal out by a score of 2-1. They probably enjoyed this upset more than anyone else - we just hope that they bought every single Wrexham player a drink afterwards.

Havant & Waterlooville vs Swansea 2008

On one of the greatest semi-pro FA Cup runs in recent history, Havant & Waterlooville toppled high-flying League One side Swansea in 2008. Waiting until the replay to secure a remarkable 4-2 victory, Havant continued their run deep into the competition.

Swansea were well on their way to becoming an established Premier League outfit, mind, and secured automatic promotion to the Championship later on that season. The sort of match takes pride of place in the annals of the FA Cup and is dredged up whenever its heroism is questioned.

Burnley vs Liverpool 2005

Okay, so there was only one division separating the Clarets from Liverpool at this time but it was still darn hilarious. Only months away from lifting the Champions League in Istanbul, Rafael Benitez’s Reds managed to lose 1-0 at Turf Moor thanks to a comical own goal from Djimi Traore.

Traore’s elegantly clumsy pirouette ended with the ball in his own net and Liverpool were left to focus on their Champions League charge. What a moment, what a competition.
