The 22-year-old right-back’s contract expires in the summer and he is yet to agree a new deal at the Nou Camp, which has recently alerted Reds boss Brendan Rodgers as he looks for a long-term replacement for Glen Johnson.
Anfield managing director Ian Ayre flew to Spain last month to discuss a possible move to the Premier League with Montoya’s representatives, but Benitez is now thought to be ready to join the race for the defender.
And it is also believed that Serie A duo AC Milan and Inter Milan are also interested in tempting him to Italy, with Montoya’s agent reportedly ready to fly to Italy to meet with a number of parties interested.
Montoya, who is has represented Spain at every youth level from Under-17 to Under-23 but is yet to make an appearance for the first-team, made his Barcelona debut in 2010 and has since made 45 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals.
This season he has found his first-team opportunities limited, making just nine appearances in all competitions, and it is believed he is willing to listen to offers in exhange of regular first-team football.
