“There is no doubt he will be a great player for now and for the future of Liverpool – we could see good things from him” Leiva told the Mirror.
The 20-year-old forward impressed everyone on his Anfield debut after scoring a skilful goal and showing some technically sound touches in the 5-0 victory against Swansea.
Despite being quite young when he left his league, Lucas assures Coutinho has already left a mark in Brazil, where he enjoys a bigger recognition.
“His reputation in Brazil is actually very high but he left home very early. He was only a boy,” the Brazilian midfielder added.
“We could not see him playing in the first team in Brazil back then, because he had only played a few games.”
But after his unsuccessful stint at Inter Milan, Leiva believes that Coutinho has a new opportunity to make an impact in European football playing for Brendan Rodgers’ side.
“Here this is a new challenge for him. He has settled very well and it will help him that there are a few South American players here already.”
