Atletico Madrid have emerged as one of the latest candidates for Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina’s signature, according to reports from The Mirror.

The Spaniard is currently on loan at Napoli in Italy, but is widely believed to have already played his last game for the Anfield side.

Simon Mignolet’s arrival over the summer was thought to be one designed to ease Reina’s move to Barcelona, but any potential deal collapsed once the Catalan side’s number one Victor Valdes announced that he would be staying for this season before his contract expires.

Since then the Nou Camp has still remained the former Kop icon’s most likely destination, but now rumours have begun to circulate that the La Liga champions are eyeing other stoppers.

This has alerted Atletico, who are ready to make a move for Reina.

The high-flying Madrid side currently have Thibaut Courtois – on loan from Chelsea – as their man between the sticks, but he is expected to return to England or potentially sign for Barca at the end of the season.

Reina is seen as a good alternative by the club, who are confident that Liverpool will sell for around £4.5m to remove the glovesman’s vast earnings from their expenditure.
