Liverpool centre-back Daniel Agger is facing a battle to stay at Anfield, with Brendan Rodgers rapidly losing faith in his abilities, according to reports from The Express.

The Danish defender has long been hailed as one of the Reds’ star performers, and was this season promoted to vice-captain following Jamie Carragher’s retirement.

However, a series of injuries and the form of Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho – when fit – has limited Agger’s game time, with speculation suggesting that Rodgers is growing frustrated with his displays.

The silky centre-back was unceremoniously hauled off during the weekend’s 4-3 win over Swansea after 63 minutes, with some sloppy work at the back from the Merseysiders almost costing them a vital three points in their title charge.

Kolo Toure came on to replace him, and now it remains to be seen as to whether or not Rodgers will stick with the Ivorian for their trip to Southampton.

Agger has been the subject of £20m and £15m offers from Manchester City and Barcelona respectively over the course of the last two summers, but has been retained due to his importance to the club.

Liverpool have been lauded for their attack – which has provided the most goals in the league – but their defence has leaked a whopping 35 goals – just one fewer than Crystal Palace.

Skrtel is the weak one. When he plays we lose goals. He was at fault for a couple again the other day.
