Liverpool are closing in on their second signing of the summer after triggering the £9.75m release clause in Emre Can’s Bayer Leverkusen contract, according to reports from The Mirror.

The Reds have been tracking the promising 20-year-old for the past few months, and have now made their interest official.

Brendan Rodgers is thought to see the versatile German U-21 star as a top addition as he plots to bolster his squad ahead of a season in the Champions League.

Can only joined Leverkusen from Bayern Munich last summer – who have a buy-back clause they may use – and has been a massive hit in the Bundesliga after securing regular playing time.

Liverpool are yet to agree personal terms, but it looks likely that they will snap up the youngster after removing his club’s wishes from the equation.

Can featured 39 times for Leverkusen last term despite some injury concerns, playing on both flanks, in a holding and an attacking midfield role and on the left side of defence.

Liverpool have already snapped up Rickie Lambert from Southampton and are close to securing a deal for Sevilla’s Alberto Moreno
