Liverpool are edging closer to sealing a January deal for Barcelona full-back Martin Montoya, after managing director Ian Ayre flew to Spain earlier this week to discuss a deal for his signature, according to reports from The Express.
The 22-year-old has been on the radars of both the Reds and Arsenal over the course of the past few months, with his future at the Nou Camp far from certain.
Montoya’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season, and negotiations surrounding an extension have broken down.
It is thought that the Spanish U-21 international was seeking assurances about his first-team future, but it is believed that he has little chance of dislodging Daniel Alves in Tata Martino’s starting XI.
Liverpool were set to discuss a Bosman move with the player, who is free to negotiate a pre-contract with other clubs at the turn of the year.
But, Ayre was tasked with thrashing out a winter switch on a trip to the Catalan city.
The Merseysiders are believed to be keen to push through a quick deal due to Jose Enrique’s injury woes and the erratic form of on-loan left-back Aly Cissokho.
Montoya can play on either side of the defence, and Rodgers is believed to see him as an ideal addition to his squad.
Should Liverpool do all they can to secure Martin Montoya?
