It is thought that at minimum Liverpool need to freshen up in this department of the pitch even if it is just to keep Pepe Reina on his toes.
The Spainard may have found some of his old form recently but there are long-term fears over whether the Anfield club can depend upon him when pushing for a top four finish.
It is also believed that Reina favours a move back to his native Spain this summer after spending the best years of his career with Liverpool.
Initially Liverpool had glanced over Stoke’s Asmir Begovic but it is reckoned that the £15 million asking price would be a huge stumbling block in any potential move.
Rodgers is thought to want to spend the bulk of his budget reinforcing his attacking options so sees Al-Habsi as a cheaper alternative to Begovic.
Al-Habsi has been in fine form again for the Latics this campaign and has plenty of necessary Premier League experience so appears to fit the bill for the Merseyside club.
They could get their man for a bargain fee if the Latics do end up getting relegated this season after staving off the prospect for the last two campaigns.
Whether the Wigan keeper would be keen on the move is yet to be seen after spending the early part of his career on the bench at Bolton Wanderers and he wouldn’t be eager to repeat that experience.
