Liverpool have announced the capture of Danny Ings on a free transfer, subject to a medical.

The England U21 international's Burnley contract expires at the end of this month and decided not to remain at Turf Moor following the Clarets' relegation back to the Championship.

Ings netted 11 goals in 35 league games last term and impressed during his maiden season in the top flight to attract interest from clubs in the top six, with Tottenham also reported to be interested in his signature.

But the 22-year-old has opted to sign for Liverpool and will be officially unveiled on July 1 when the summer transfer window opens.

Liverpool will have to pay Burnley a compensation fee for the striker due to his age, with a Burnley statement this morning reading: "Burnley Football Club has rejected an offer made by Liverpool but will continue to have dialogue with the club in order to reach a resolution over the fee."

Ings is Liverpool's second summer signing already, with manager Brendan Rodgers eager to bolster his squad following a disappointing campaign that saw the Reds finish sixth.

James Milner also agreed to join the Anfield outfit on a free last week after turning down a contract extension at Manchester City.

And although the Liverpool faithful were delighted with the capture of Milner, they appear to be torn on whether Ings will be as good a signing as his far more experienced compatriot.

Here's just a handful of tweets that followed Liverpool's announcement, and we sense A LOT of sarcasm throughout...
