Liverpool FC manager Brendan Rodgers is lining up a potential transfer bid for Schalke striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar in January.

Huntelaar will see his contract at the end of the season expire and become a free agent, but in January he will be in  a position to sign a pre-contract agreement with another club.

The 29-year-old has stalled on talks with current club Schalke and Liverpool have been put on red alert as they look to remedy their striker crisis.

Rodgers is keen on a cut-price deal to bring the striker to the Premier League in January to deal with the current lack of fire-power that he has on offer, the Daily Star reports.

Liverpool are struggling with Luis Suarez being the only fit striker at the club after Andy Carroll was loaned to West Ham and Fabio Borini broke his foot training with the Italian U-21 side.

Schalke’s general manager, Horst Heldt, told Sport 1 that he hopes his striker will sign a new contract in December.

“We have decided that we won’t have any contract talks before December and there will be no new developments.

“I have had the feeling Klaas-Jan can’t decide at this stage and I will give him the time he needs. My goal is to persuade him to stay at Schalke and to extend his contract.

“We will resume talks in December, January at the latest, and then I expect a quick decision.”

Huntelaar is attracting a lot of interest particularly from the Premier League, with the likes of Manchester United and Tottenham also being linked with the Dutch International.

Italian champions Juventus are also keen on last season’s Bundesliga top scorer.

Huntelaar will be in action for Schalke on Wednesday night when his current team visit Arsenal in the Champions League.
