Liverpool FC boss Brendan Rodgers has responded to transfer speculation linking striker Luis Suarez with a move to Manchester City by denying the Uruguayan international is for sale.

This morning, the back pages of several broadsheet and tabloid newspapers reported that Citizens boss Roberto Mancini was considering a £50million bid for the 25-year-old, matching the fee Chelsea paid for former Liverpool striker Fernando Torres in January 2011.

It is believed the Manchester club are switching transfer targets as Atletico Madrid’s Ramodel Falcao appears to be moving closer to signing for Chelsea rather than the league champions.

Suarez has been in lethal form this season, scoring 11 goals in 16 appearances for Liverpool, and has become somewhat a talisman for the struggling Merseysiders who are 13th in the Premier League. Currently, he is Liverpool’s only available senior striker, but has performed well under the added pressure.

Speaking in a press conference that was replayed on Sky Sports News, the Liverpool coach told reporters: “If we lose Luis [Suarez] we’ve got no strikers. I can’t afford to lose any of them.

“He’s certainly not someone we want to sell or move on.

“He’s a brilliant player to work with, and we want to add to our squad not take out of it, especially a world class player."

When quizzed on how he would keep Suarez at Anfield, Rodgers replied: “We just continue to work and stay focused on what we’re trying to achieve.

“Luis already showed in the summer his commitment to the club when he signed a new deal.

“He’s in a great moment in his footballing life here at Liverpool – he’s scoring goals and working well, he’s very very happy here.”

Rodgers responded quickly and bluntly to the suggestion that City could make an offer to good to refuse if a bidding war breaks out by retorting: “There will be no bidding war, he’s staying here.”
