Lazio defender Modibo Diakite has set his sights on a move to Liverpool if he leaves Italy during the summer, according to his agent.
The Premier League side are believed to be tracking the Frenchman, with manager Brendan Rodgers exploring possible defensive additions at the end of the season.
Diakite will be a free agent once the current campaign ends, with his contract at the Stadio Olimpico due to expire.
There are believed to e a number of interested parties, but the 25-year-old’s agent Ulisse Savini believes that Liverpool will be the most likely destinations for his client:
“Liverpool is our first option for June,” he is quoted by Sky Sports via tuttomercatoweb.com.
“It’s in issue in progress and we have to talk yet.”
However, Savini insisted that there is no rush to conclude a deal and that Diakite’s situation will be resolved ahead of the summer:
“Everyone knows that the contract is expiring. Also, Lazio know there is no hurry.
“We’ll see in the coming days. However, it would be hard to say no to Liverpool.”
The Reds are believed to be keen to build on their defensive options at the end of the season, with Rodgers having addressed his attacking department during January.
Club legend Jamie Carragher’s future is a slight doubt with his contract set to expire during the summer, whilst Uruguayan centre-back Sebastian Coates has failed to adjust to English football.
