FC Basel winger Mohamed Salah has handed Liverpool a major transfer boost by telling close friends that he wants to move to Anfield, according to reports from The Sun.

The Egyptian international has been the Reds’ top transfer target for some time, and was expected to have been already announced as their first signing of 2014 as rumours before Christmas indicated that a deal was close to completion.

However, with Brendan Rodgers thought to have been confident of seeing a £7m switch, the Swiss side have since significantly upped their valuation amid interest from big-spending Russians Zenit Saint Petersburg.

It is now thought that Basel are demanding close to £16m, a figure that the Gazprom-backed outfit can match.

But, Salah himself only has eyes for Liverpool.

The man dubbed ‘Egypt’s answer to Lionel Messi’ is rumoured to have set his sights on the Merseyside giants, and has told friends that he wants to sign for them.

This will come as a major boost for Liverpool, who are expected to up their transfer plans in the coming days after a meeting between Rodgers and the club’s owners took place prior to their 2-2 draw with Aston Villa.
